For my first design using hexpleating, I wanted a beetle, that is not too complex.
Robert Lang has made some scarab beetles using Hexpleating, which I used as inspiration. However I wanted to include the pattern on the back as well as the elytra. Since that is not one of the most complex things (no horns, no spikes etc.) I figured it would be perfect to try out Hexpleating. Later I reviewed the design and added details.
For the grid, the top side is diveded into 14 equal units.
