There are many butterfly designs out there. But I found not a single one looking good from all angles. That´s when I knew, what I wanted to achieve.
The road to the finished for of this model was a hard one and by now, I know why there are so few Butterflys with patterns on the wings and legs.
First I experimented with wings like Kota Imais butterfly, but I didn´t succeed. The model looked good from the top, it had legs and antennae, but the body simply didn´t fit, it was to big and not fragile enough. Additionally, I found no good way to improve the design to resolve these issues. The first version was finished, but I was not satisfied at all. Then I took a break and moved on to some other subjects.
In 2023, I looked again at Robert Langs butterfly from “Origami Insects and Their Kin“. It has the a simple, symmetric and absolutely brilliant idea to implement legs. Therefore I left the placement of the legs, antennae and wings, but I changed its crease pattern to make a detailed abdomen and to add eyes. The pattern on the wings was developed via trial and error and is not included in the crease pattern. This time, it worked well…
Now I´m finally satisfied with an origami butterfly.
