Ant V3

I designed this version of an origami ant in 2024. The first version had a 32 x 32 grid, but no details, the second version had all the details, but a 34 x 34 grid and odd proportions. The third version has again a 32 x 32 grid, but the details are included. The crease pattern has many off- grid structures.

The development of my Ant from Version 1 to Version 3

During the time of the development, I learned a lot about constructing crease patterns and refining them.
For the first version, I used a sketch I made with Treemaker and tried to make it mostly Boxpleating. Then I folded it and for long I thought it was one of my best designs (it was made before the first designs I published). After one or two years, I wanted to add some details and refined the crease pattern for the first time. That led to the second version, wich I´m not satisfied with. I used a bigger grid and that led to thicker (and slightly differently placed) legs, so that I was not able to shape it well. However at that time, it was the best I could do (I still drew my crease patterns with pencil and paper).
After getting myself a drawing tool, I tried again one or two years later. Having again learned some things about crease patterns, I tried to add details into the Off-grid structures of the first Version. I succeded. The crease pattern lies on a 32 grid again. It´s a great exercise for Off-grid structures, you can find them in nearly every part of the crease pattern. Even though one front leg comes from the middle of the paper, I could shape it well. The transition is a clean one.

I think it is one of my most efficient designs. The ratio is about 0.3 and for an origami ant, it has really long and slender legs.
