This origami griffon was designed in 2022, because I watched the series “Lucifer”.
Having seen the angel wings, I wanted to make a model with good wings. However, I did not feel ready to design and so I settled for a griffon instead. At first I designed the wings (they were my inspiration after all): To create an organic shape, I used a tilted grid. Afterwards, I placed the body and the legs in the crease pattern. This left enough excess paper to add scales to the neck and feathers to the head. The first version was finished.
When making a testfold, I discovered that the proportions were off, so I lengthened the legs and the body. I also made new claws and gave the tail some spikes.
For the third version, I added a beak and changed the messy parts of the crease pattern into clean Boxpleating.
It has an unusual but really interesting crease pattern using a tilted grid and book symmetry.
The model is folded from a 50cm Kraft paper, the wingspan of the finished griffon is 27cm. From beak to tail, it is 18cm long. The most tricky parts were the transition units around the feathers and the neck, but I think it turned out really well. I think I achieved my original aim, to recreate the impressive wings on the way to that, I managed to make quite a nice griffon.
